India’s National Football Team Appoints New Head Coach with Rich Experience in ISL and I-League

Khalid Jamil has been appointed as the head coach of the Indian football team, bringing with him a wealth of experience from the Indian Super League (ISL) and I-League.

Prior to this prestigious role, Jamil served as the head coach of Jamshedpur FC, where he made a significant impact with his tactical acumen and leadership.

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) confirmed his appointment, which marks a new chapter in India’s footballing journey.

The federation’s official ‘X’ account extended congratulations to Jamil, welcoming him to the role that carries immense responsibility and hope for Indian football’s future. He has signed a two-year contract, with an option for extension by an additional year, giving him ample scope to shape the national squad.

A Historic Appointment for an Indian Coach

Jamil’s appointment is historic he is the first Indian coach to lead the Indian senior men’s team since Savio Medeira in 2012. His deep familiarity with domestic club football, having managed top teams like Jamshedpur FC, NorthEast United FC, Aizawl FC, East Bengal FC, Mohun Bagan AC, and Mumbai FC, has prepared him well for this role.

Notably, he played a pivotal role in guiding Aizawl FC to their first-ever I-League title in 2016-17, a feat that earned him widespread acclaim.

Jamil’s Vision and First Mission

Expressing his pride and humility, Jamil said, “It’s a tremendous honor and responsibility to lead the Indian national team. Over the past few years, I’ve had the opportunity to work closely with Indian players, understanding their strengths and weaknesses.

The upcoming AFC Asian Cup qualifiers against Singapore and the CAF Nations Cup will be critical, and the insights I’ve gained will be invaluable in preparing the team.”

He will begin his tenure with a full-time training camp on August 15 at the Dravid-Padukone Sports Excellence Centre in Bengaluru.

His first assignment as head coach will be the CAF Nations Cup qualifiers, where India faces hosts Tajikistan (August 29), Iran (September 1), and Afghanistan (September 4) in Group B.

Looking Ahead to the AFC Asian Cup and Beyond

In October, during the FIFA international window, India will play two crucial AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers against Singapore on October 9 and 14.

Jamil’s extensive coaching experience in the ISL and I-League, managing clubs like East Bengal, Mohun Bagan, and Mumbai FC, will be instrumental as he prepares the national team for these vital fixtures.

A Glance at Jamil’s Playing and Coaching Career

A former midfielder, Jamil represented India in 15 matches. He made his international debut in 1997 during the SAFF Championship in Nepal, where India emerged victorious. He was also part of the Indian squads for the 2002 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and the 2001 Merdeka Tournament.

His club career includes stints in the National Football League, Federation Cup triumphs, and titles with Mahindra United. Jamil also played for Air India and Mumbai FC, and represented Maharashtra in the Santosh Trophy, winning the title in 1999.
