If the Asia Cup gets cancelled, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) could suffer significant losses.
Asia Cup 2025 T20 Latest Update
The Asia Cup 2025 is scheduled to be played in the T20 format. However, uncertainty continues to surround the tournament, which is set to be hosted by Pakistan. India has shown no willingness to agree to any of Pakistan’s proposals regarding the event. As a result, the future of this Asian Cricket Council (ACC) tournament appears to be in jeopardy. If the Asia Cup does not take place, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) could suffer substantial financial losses.
It is worth noting that India is the defending champion of the Asia Cup. In 2023, India refused to travel to Pakistan for the tournament, leading to Sri Lanka being chosen as a neutral venue for India’s matches. Earlier this year, Pakistan hosted the Champions Trophy, but India once again declined to cross the border and played all its matches at a neutral venue in Dubai.
PCB Will Get PKR 8.8B Money
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is expecting to earn an estimated PKR8.8 billion this year from its share of revenues distributed by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). According to a PTI report, the PCB has projected earnings of USD 25.9 million (approximately ₹7.7 billion) from its share in the ICC during this financial year.
Billions of Rupees Revenue for Asia Cup
The board is also expecting additional revenue of ₹1.16 billion from the Asia Cup and ₹77.7 million from other international cricket events. According to the report, “The income from the ICC and the Asia Cup is extremely crucial for the financial health of Pakistan cricket.” Uncertainty over the Asia Cup’s schedule and venue has increased. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi did not attend the ICC meetings in Singapore last week. Instead, he participated virtually in the Annual General Meeting (AGM). The ACC Annual General Meeting (AGM) is slated for July 24–26 in Dhaka. The BCCI has requested a change of venue and may boycott the meeting if it remains in Dhaka
The Meeting is to be Held in Dhaka, Bangladesh
According to the report, PCB CEO Syed Sumbal Ahmed attended the ICC meeting. However, he did not receive a “positive response” from the BCCI or the cricket boards of Sri Lanka and Afghanistan regarding his participation in the ACC meeting scheduled in Dhaka on July 24, which was called to finalize preparations for the Asia Cup.
India isn’t Going to Dhaka
According to the report, “The PCB faced strong opposition from several members over the ACC’s decision to hold the meeting in Dhaka. India, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Oman, and a few other associate member boards were firm in their decision not to travel to Dhaka.” It further stated that the discussions held on the sidelines of the ICC meeting do not bode well for the Asia Cup scheduled in September, as the BCCI is unwilling to send its representative to Dhaka.
May Asia Cup Shifted to UAE
The current ACC President is Mohsin Naqvi. India was originally scheduled to host the Asia Cup in September, but due to the ongoing tensions with Pakistan following the pahalgam terrorist attack, there is a strong possibility that the tournament may be shifted to the UAE. India’s Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya recently clarified that India has “no objection” to playing Pakistan in multilateral tournaments like the Asia Cup but bilateral ties remain off-limits. This signals potential flexibility, contingent on formal government approval and tournament logistics.
