A new law has been passed in Parliament targeting online gaming applications. Following this legislation, all types of gaming apps have been banned in India.
As a direct consequence, Dream11 has informed the BCCI that they will no longer be able to sponsor the Indian cricket team. This development means the BCCI will now need to find a new sponsor before the Asian cricketing showcase.
Dream11 No Longer the Official Sponsor of Team India
The new regulations have hit Dream11’s business hard. According to a report in Indian Express, the company has stated that due to these legal restrictions, they cannot continue their sponsorship of the Indian team.
The BCCI is expected to soon issue a fresh tender to find a new sponsor for the team’s kit and branding. Dream11 officials have already met with BCCI CEO Hemang Amin, who confirmed that the company will no longer be able to serve as the team’s sponsor.
Only Two Weeks Left for the Asia Cup
With just two weeks remaining before the start of the Asia Cup, the BCCI faces the urgent task of securing a new sponsorship deal. An official from the cricket board revealed that there will be no penalty or penalty clause invoked due to Dream11’s exit, thanks to a contractual clause that exempts the company if government laws impact their business.
Dream11’s Rise and Influence in Indian Fantasy Sports
Founded 18 years ago, Dream11 has grown into India’s largest fantasy gaming platform. According to Bloomberg, its valuation stands at a staggering $8 billion. In July 2023, Dream11 secured the rights to be the lead sponsor of the BCCI for Rs 358 crore, taking over from Byju’s, which previously held the position.
